CHARACTER NAME: BoJack Horseman
CHARACTER AGE: 53
SERIES: BoJack Horseman
CHRONOLOGY: At the end of episode s4ep2, "The Old Sugarman Place"
CLASS: Attempted Hero
HOUSING: Alone
BACKGROUND: BoJack Horseman Wiki
PERSONALITY: BoJack Horseman is his own worst enemy in every conceivable way. At his emotional peak in the early 90s when his sitcom was at it's most popular, he was the closest he's ever been to happy, but because he doesn't know how to process or sustain real contentment, it didn't last. Due in part to his upbringing in a neglectful and emotionally abusive household, he almost reflexively ruins anything good in his life. In the case of his success in the 90s, choosing his popularity, and by then inflated ego, over standing by his best friend, he cut off his last and only real friendship of the time. This act started him down the path of self-loathing and alcoholism he's been wallowing in ever since.
BoJack has been described by multiple people in his life as being a coward, even when he was at his most emotionally stable. This cowardice is at best a hindrance to his own happiness, and at worst something that manifests as sardonic, cruel bitterness and destructive codependency. BoJack simultaneously pushes everyone away at the fear of them knowing and rejecting him, while clinging almost suffocatingly hard at the thought of actually being alone. Unsurprisingly, this makes him almost impossible to be friends with, or to even be around. He has, in fact, ruined almost every one of the meaningful relationships in his life as a result of this behavior.
Aside from his cowardice, guilt is probably the second most prevalent theme in his life. Due to his impressive ability to push everyone away, it's unsurprising that in his sober moments of clarity and self reflection, he desperately wants to right his past wrongs. To prove to himself more than anyone else that he's ultimately good. This has made him a grossly irresponsible enabler in multiple cases, and even resulted in the death of a friend and daughter figure when codependency, enabling and flagrant drug use met their inevitable conclusion.
When these sorts of things happen, BoJack lacks any emotional ability to cope with them, and generally runs away. In fact, running away is how he deals with almost every bad thing that happens in his life - and even sometimes good things. True to his nihilistic nature, even the most apparently positive things in his life, including being nominated for an Oscar, just throw him into a spiral of self doubt, and remind him how meaningless he thinks he is, how much he hates himself, and how pointless he finds the world around him. This circular issue has kept BoJack from being happy consistently, no matter how well his life is going.
The show has finally proved in the 4th season that BoJack is, in fact, capable of emotional growth, primarily through family and actual responsibility, but because I'm apping him just before any of this, BoJack as he will be in game is still an emotional trash fire with the capacity for growth.
POWER:
BoJack would have a few powers (though he has none in canon), but with one specific criteria for use - they all require him to be sober. So effectively, he has no powers... BUT, if he ever gets his act together enough to use them, they are as follows:
- Enhanced Speed, along the lines of a top tier race horse.
- Enhanced Strength, the type where you can lift cars, not punch through walls.
- Limited Future Sight, quick glimpses into the somewhat distant future, meaning years not minutes. He will likely NEVER use this, but I want him to have it so he can agonize about it.
〈 CHARACTER SAMPLES 〉
COMMUNITY POST (VOICE) SAMPLE:
Is this thing on? [A talking horse with a cigarette hanging out of his mouth taps at the screen.] Whatever. [He pauses, blowing smoke and considering his reflection in the monitor before sitting back.] Right. So. While being famous is not new or interesting, or even good, I am willing to admit that the experience should have at least sort of prepared me for this place. But, in a twist that absolutely should not have surprised me, all fame is basically terrible and I don't know why for even a fleeting moment I thought super powers would change that.
[There's another pause.]
Yeeeeah. So I have no idea where I was going with that. [He takes a drink.] Oh, right. I remember now. If anyone wants to help an actual celebrity get their feet under them here, consider this official permission to approach me. Unless you're, you know, super gross. I really don't need that right now. I feel like having to turn help away on principal would kind of bum me out.
[He reaches forward to turn the video off, but can't figure out the sound. There's some banging around before finally a voice.]
I hate the internet.
LOGS POST (PROSE) SAMPLE:
It's early when BoJack opens an eye, closing it again and groaning when the sun comes in through the hotel window. It could as easily be 7:00am as it could be well into the afternoon, and no part of BoJack has the energy to find out.
"Goddamnit."
He tries to sort through his thoughts, to piece together the night before, but the pounding headache of a hangover makes the process difficult. After a while he bullies himself into a sitting position, reaching for the empty scotch bottle on the table and turning it upside down, possibly just for the private visual of disappointment. With a sigh he sets it down and stands, padding lazily towards the kitchenette and pressing a few buttons on the coffee maker and hoping for the best. It starts whirring mechanically, and satisfied he leans against the counter.
His situation comes back to him hazily while the coffee brews, and as it does a vague sense of panic begins to set in. The powers, the hero status, the expectations. There's no way this wasn't a mistake. He isn't supposed to be here. If it wasn't a mistake at the back end, all it'll take is a few paparazzi shots of god know what to let everyone here know that he can't be trusted with anything, or even the smallest scrap of responsibility.
He feels his breath coming faster, something near a panic attack, right up until his phone buzzes with a notification. The sudden distraction pulling him back from his thoughts, and with a small shrug, he shakes himself out of his head and grabs his coffee.
